This Week’s ESA Science Grade 10 Lunch-time Tutorial

ESA Science is pleased to continue the weekly “Lunchtime Tutorials” for Grades 9 and 10.

This Thursday, Mr. Berkan will review Grade 10 “The Cell Cycle and Mitosis“.

Tutorials take place in Room S14 and begin about 15 minutes into lunch. The atmosphere is very welcoming and students may eat lunch.

 

ESA’s STEM Council Visitor – Engineer and Lawyer, Ms. Tamila Ivanov

ESA’s STEM Council (Science Technology Engineering and Math) is hosting a visit from Ms. Tamila Ivanov today (Wednesday) at lunch (12:10 pm to 12:50 pm) in Room S14. Ms. Ivanov will discuss her experiences involving civil engineering and real estate law.

All are welcome. Students may eat their lunches during this informal discussion.

Next Wednesday, STEM will host a visit from engineer Michael Smith. In the new year, Tracey Stockley, a clinical lab director, will visit. Stay tuned for details.

This week’s “ESA Science Lunch-time Tutorial” will take place today (Thursday) in Room S14. Ms. Fara-On will review Grade 9 metric system, graphing and density. During next Thursday’s tutorial, Mr. Berkan will review Grade 10 cell cycle and mitosis.

 

In general, tutorials take place weekly, alternate between Grades 9 and 10, take place in Room S14 and begin about 15 minutes into lunch. The atmosphere is very welcoming and students may eat their lunch.

This week’s “ESA Science Lunch-time Tutorial” will take place on Thursday, in Room S14. Ms. Fara-On will review Grade 9 metric system, graphing and density.

In general, tutorials take place weekly in Room S14, alternate between Grades 9 and 10, and begin about 15 minutes into lunch. The atmosphere is very welcoming and students are welcome to eat their lunch. Senior students often attend and help out.

ESA’s STEM Council Visitor – Ms. Leslie Knighton

ESA’s STEM Council (Science Technology Engineering and Math) is hosting a visit from Ms. Leslie Knighton lunch today (Wednesday, December 7) in Room S14.

Ms. Knighton will discuss her education and career paths, including an Honours Math degree from Waterloo and a CA (now CPA). Her career path took her from public accounting to corporate Canada where she worked for an airline, telecommunications company and IT company. Now starting her own business. Leslie’s current passion is financial literacy.

All are welcome.

This Week’s ESA Science Lunch-time Tutorial

ESA Science is pleased to continue the relatively new “Lunchtime Tutorials” for Grades 9 and 10. The first three tutorials were well attended and very well received.

Today (Tuesday), Mr. Schumacher will present “Program Notes for the upcoming Grade 9 Chemistry Unit”. He will present a summary of the main ideas and connections, with a theme of “don’t miss the forest for the trees”. The tutorial will include several quick student activities using various models.

In general, tutorials take place in Room S14 and begin about 15 minutes into lunch. The atmosphere is very welcoming and students are welcome to eat their lunch.

Invitation to “STEM” Speakers

ESA “STEM” is always looking for lunch-time guest speakers in the area of “Science, Technology, Engineering and Math”. Presentations can be as simple as a brief description of your science/math experience(s) and your path(s) along the way, followed by a some relaxed question-and-answer time. Most presentations so far have taken place a classroom and have had audiences of about 15-40 students.

Today (Thursday), Mr. Boody will review Grade 9 “Ecology Terms and Connections”. Next Thursday (November 17), Mr. Berkan will review Grade 10 Acids and Bases.

Today’s STEM Council Lunch-Time Guest Speaker

Today (Wednesday) at lunch in Room S14, ESA’s STEM Council’s guest speaker will be Mr. Daniel Dalessandro from OISE. He will speak about his decision to study science, including his post-graduate degree and research in Chemistry, as well as his decision to pursue a career in teaching.

All are welcome.

New Science Lunchtime Tutorials!

ESA Science is pleased to announce and begin the new “Lunchtime Science Tutorials” for Grades 9 and 10. For each grade, the tutorials take place every other week, review the main ideas of recent lessons, have Q&A time, and are assisted by senior science students. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming.

This week, on Thursday, November 3, Mrs. Neag will review Grade 10 “Chemical Names and Reactions. Next week, on Thursday, November 10, Mr. Boody will review Grade 9 “Ecology Terms and Connections”.
