NINE – the musical in concert

  • Featuring ESA’s WoCo and women’s ensemble

Podium Concert Productions proudly presents the Canadian Premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical “Nine in Concert”, starring Stratford Festival veteran Juan Chioran. This limited engagement concert of 3 performances only, will take place at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre for the Arts, 427 Bloor St W (between Spadina and Bathurst)

When: Friday, January 12 and Saturday January 13, 2018
    Time: Friday @ 7:30PM / Saturday @ 2:00 and 7:30PM

Groups of 8 or more can experience a world-class orchestra of 23 musicians, hand-picked and led by Mark Camilleri who will accompany 15 of Canada’s brightest stars of stage and musical theatre and an ensemble of rising stars from Etobicoke School of The Arts.

Based on Italian director Federico Fellini’s comic masterpiece of biographical filmmaking, 8 1/2, Maury Yeston’s sultry and enchanting musical Nine follows the life of world-famous film director Guido Contini as he prepares his latest picture and balances the numerous women in his life. Contini is dreading his imminent 40th birthday and facing a midlife crisis, which is blocking his creative impulses and entangling him in a web of romantic difficulties in early-1960s Venice. Contini is also, after recent box office failures, drifting toward a nervous breakdown from which he is held back only by the support of his wife, Luisa. As his sanity disintegrates, he drifts into nostalgic reverie, eventually focusing on the formative sexual encounter of his life, which occurred at the age of nine.

The original Broadway production of Nine opened in 1982 and was nominated for 12 and won five Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score. It also received 8 Drama Desk Award nominations, winning 7, and a Grammy Award nomination. In 2003, it won another Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical with Antonio Banderas; Jane Krakowski won for Best Featured Actress. Nine was adapted for film as a musical drama in 2009, directed and produced by Rob Marshall (Chicago). The ensemble principal cast consisted of Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, and Sophia Loren, with Kate Hudson and Fergie. Nine received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actress (Penélope Cruz).

Juan Chioran (born June 18, 1963) is an Argentine-Canadian actor and singer who is primarily associated with stage roles at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada. Juan Chioran is based in Stratford, Ontario. Chioran is best known for his voice acting roles, such as Doji in Beyblade: Metal Fusion (the first 32 episodes, later succeeded by Andrew Jackson), King Caradoc in Jane and the Dragon, and Barry Bullevardo in the animated series Iggy Arbuckle.
