PORTFOLIO DAY 2015

Six years ago PD1 was very much about Portfolios. Now, as we reach towards PD6, it is also a cultural event, an exhibition, a celebration, a rethinking of the possibilities within art and education, an opportunity to practice speaking about the things we have thought about and made, an example of what is possible, and a meeting place of some incredible minds and potentials and future possibilities.

This year seventy 16 and 17 year old ESA students will present work to about a hundred and ten representatives from fifty-four post-secondary schools throughout the day. We welcome a visit by MOCCA Director David Liss as he curates our upcoming exhibition at York University. We will have visitors from the National Post and the CBC who will cover the event as it unfolds. We will welcome visits by high school and middle school teachers, curators, gallery owners, future students and their families, art consultants, art collectors, and professional artists.

WE INVITE everyone to join us from 7-9 pm to see the work and the show and certainly speak to the participants if you like. Portfolio Day is more about conversation than product, and we hope you get a chance to speak with us!

Parents of ESA students who have questions for the representatives are invited to join us at 6.30 in the library.

Parking will likely be an issue so arrive early to get a spot!

We will wait to sell work until Thursday May 26th at 3.30 pm but it is a good idea to document pieces you are interested in acquiring this year as the demand this year is already very high.

Stay tuned for dates for Art Talk 5 and Art Talk 6!

Parent Meeting

For Parents/students in Vis Art/Photography/Film interested in hearing what we know about post-secondary applications/schools/scholarship opportunities

Given the success of the past five years esa students are in a unique position in the world when it comes to acceptances and possible scholarships to schools around the world. Glenn Novak and I will be happy to meet with anyone about to become involved in post-secondary applications in portfolio based programs.

Strategies for achieving increased scholarship offers require a great deal of effort from students and family members and we will discuss successful approaches from our recent experiences.

We are happy to share everything we know.

When: Tuesday October 6 at 7pm
Where: Room 102 at esa

Visual Art Update

A fast paced beginning to what is sure to be our most exciting school year yet!

Y Magazine out of New York just published an article featuring photographs by grade 12 Celeste Cares and grade 11 Lily Watson:

http://y-magazine.com/magazine/2015/09/18/teen-art-salon-a-place-to-go-and-make-art/

Celeste Cares and Calla McInnes were both in the first ever Teen Art Salon opening in the Lower East Side of New York City this weekend which saw a huge turnout of people and sales opportunities for both of Celeste’s very large paintings! Attached is a photo from the show.

I would like to ask that everyone join and share the public invitation to our Portfolio Day 6 Celebration at ESA – we hope you will join us at 7pm on Friday November 6th! Parents are invited to arrive at 6.30 to meet with representatives from many of the participating schools.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards National Round Tickets Reminder

The National Awards will be announced at noon on Monday. ESA won 43% of all First Round International Awards!!!

Tickets for the formal award ceremony in New York at Carnegie Hall disappear almost instantly upon being released. There are far more award recipients (and family members) than tickets.

If you win a Scholastic Art and Writing National Medal BE SURE TO IMMEDIATELY REGISTER FOR YOUR TWO TICKETS

Every year we have parents and students miss out on this amazing opportunity because they waited a few hours to log in for their tickets. If possible, have someone at a computer at noon on Monday to make sure you secure your seats. Even if you are not planning on attending, acquiring seats for other ESA members is a big help.

Thank you!

How to Maximize Scholarships Meeting Wednesday

We have had success in the past four years maximizing US and Canadian scholarships. Anyone interested in talking through the process for attaining the largest possible scholarships is welcome to attend a meeting Wednesday at 6.15pm.

This is for grade 12 parents/students currently in process and any grade 11 parents/students interested. This is designed to help Parents become aware of the steps they will need to take in order to maximize the financial support coming from the schools, and what the process entails.
