CROSS COUNTRY CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS

October 23, 2013
Today marked another extraordinary day for ESA athletics at Centennial Park in Etobicoke. At the city championships of cross country ESA’s athletes again proved to be worthy adversaries up against the city’s finest athletes. Overall we had 12 runners who all put forth outstanding individual efforts. Grade 9 boys Christian Filan and Cabot Fox placed 105th and 103rd respectively, and Matias Bessai finished an excellent 26th place – narrowly missing out on OFSAA qualification. Jake LeBlanc placed 25th in the extremely competitive junior boys race that was run in the middle of a temporary hailstorm! Our junior girls team placed a fantastic 7th, which was best of all west region schools at their age category. The team was lead by a resilient 23rd place finish by Julia Jairath, followed by Alana Park in 46th, Jade O’Hara 65th, Sofia Goulart 71st, Olena Leshchyshen 85th, Sophie Henke Tarnow in 94th and Deanne Balas in 106th. It was a really tremendous effort by this spirited group of girls and they made our school extremely proud with their efforts. Undoubtedly the race of the day, however, was the one senior boy representing ESA, Santi Bessai. The U of T trained athlete aggressively attacked the lead pack of runners, and stuck to that group as the numbers slowly dwindled from 10 down to 7, 5, 3, then ultimately 2. In a wild finish, Santi fell just short of being the Metro Region champion, but settled for a ridiculously impressive 2nd place in the race of his life. He will also be the one ESA runner representing OFSAA on November 2nd in Sudbury, Ontario.
Congratulations to all the runners on another wonderful season and thanks to all involved who keep building up ESA’s reputation as a strong athletic school.
