Welcome to the Contemporary Arts department at ESA! We look forward to seeing your application and portfolio submission.
All applications are in the form of a 6-slide slideshow that can include sketches, photos, digital images and video. Here are the TDSB criteria:
Visual Arts
Note: Visual Arts includes design concepts, animation, film and artwork
Applicants are to upload images of up to six (6) pieces of completed or in-process Visual Arts works.
- Visual Art could be created using traditional (I.e., drawing, painting, sculpture) or digital (computer) methods or a combination of both.
- Only one of the uploads could be a single film/video of 15 to 120 seconds in length.
- Applicants are encouraged to use at least one of the uploads to demonstrate their rough work including: sketchbook pages, images or notes for a completed or in-process (not yet completed) piece of art.
Reflection
Select one of the your submitted pieces of artwork.
Applicants are to submit a description of up to 300 words or a 90 second video/audio recording (maximum) describing how the artwork was completed which could include:
Identifying one challenge you faced creating this artwork and how you overcame it.
Methods and materials used.
Technology used (if applicable).
Your ideas or thinking behind the art.

What to bring in:
Bring in digital images of at least ten – twelve of your best and/or most recent creations. It can be anything you have made that you are excited about. Bring a laptop or table and they can be in a google slideshow or the like, or you can bring art copies of your work for us to look at. You can also bring in a sketchbook. You should be prepared to speak about each of your art pieces, including the ideas behind each, the medium used, and any other relevant information. In your discussion you should express your desire and interest in art, what art means to you and why you want to be at ESA. The teacher and/or students will give you feedback that should help you when doing your online application.
Your portfolio may include:
– your most creative recent work in any media – including but not limited to: knitting, felting, carving, painting, photography, video, installation, sculpture, baking, writing, drawing, illustration, fashion, etc.
– work revealing your interests, explorations, experiments, ideas, interests, creativity, curiosity, and abilities
– work that displays some research into art and artists, issues and/or topics
– unfinished work + documentation of your process
– anything you have made that you love that may not seem like art
