What transit services are available near the school?

ESA is located at 675 Royal York Rd. (between Bloor St. and the Queensway.)  The closest subway station is Royal York Station on the Bloor line.   From there you can take the 76 Royal York South bus Southbound to the school.

From the South, the 80 Queensway bus stops at Royal York.  From there it is a short walk North to ESA.

The closest GO station is Mimico GO Station.  From there, you can take the 76 Royal York South bus Northbound to ESA.

Are there opportunities within the school to earn community service hours?

Yes!  Although the 40 hours cannot be earned during school hours, there are still many opportunities within ESA:  helping out at school events such as audition day or photo day;  selling tickets at lunch for school productions; volunteering as ticket takers or ushers at performances; helping out at the Student Services office; volunteering with  SESAT as a Concession/Information Representative; and volunteering as a peer tutor.

Every Ontario secondary school student must provide 40 hours of community service as part of their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

What is available in the cafeteria and how much does it cost?

The school cafeteria serves food such as:  pizza, panzerotti, chicken burgers, noodles, poutine, salads, fruit, drinks, etc.   An average lunch might cost $4 – $6.

Where do you find lost property?

Students who want to find lost property can try the Lost and Found in the main office.   All articles found in or near the school should be taken to the office.    Students should not bring large sums of money to school.  Money and valuables should be left in lockers, not in change rooms or other public places.

If I want to communicate with a teacher, what is the best way to do so?  What is a reasonable expectation for response time?

Some teachers give students and/or parents their email addresses.  Otherwise, you should call the main office to leave a short message for the teacher.  Make clear who you are, how to reach you, which ESA student you are calling about and, briefly, what your question or concern is.   The teacher will return your call.  Give the teacher a reasonable chance to respond (24-48 hrs.) before calling or emailing a second time.   They usually need a bit of time to make sure they have the relevant information at hand, as well as the time away from the classroom or other activities to contact you.

Although Grade 9 Meet the Teachers night is NOT a good time to talk to the teachers about your child specifically, it is a good opportunity for getting contact information.

There are also two parent/guardian-teacher interview dates after report cards are issued in November and February.  Although these interviews are quite short, they are a good opportunity to discuss things with your student’s teachers.   Appointments are arranged on-line through the school website when the report cards go home, a week prior to the interviews.

Is there a number to call if my child is sick or absent?

If a student is ill or absent for some other reason, his or her parent or guardian should phone the school and report the absence:  416-394-6910.
